The Italian State Comprehensive Institute of Barcelona is one of the first Italian schools founded abroad; it was established in 1882 by the Società di Beneficenza e Mutuo Soccorso, which supported Italian families in the city. It was recognized by the Italian state in 1941 and became a state school in 1951. Reciprocal recognition with the Spanish government occurred through a bilateral agreement on August 11, 1955 (BOE February 29, 1957). The school has two campuses and offers primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary (scientific lyceum) programs, with the primary and lower secondary campus also housing the Italian Paritary Kindergarten; Italian is the main language of instruction, and Catalan, Spanish, and English are taught as part of the language curriculum.
The school enriches its curriculum each year with MOF and institutional projects across all levels. Projects include theatre laboratories, writing, multimedia creation, and gender parity initiatives, as well as courses promoting scientific literacy. For 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, calendars of MOF and institutional projects are published, including the Library Project, Theatre projects, Reading and science literacy initiatives, and intercultural language-support programs such as Catalan and Spanish literacy, plus the Barcelona-Athens cultural exchange. The lineup also includes Intercultura, Photo Lab, and Street Art projects, among other cultural activities, highlighting a lively school community.
