Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Barcelona Japanese School was established to address the educational needs of the growing Japanese community in Barcelona. In 1978, as the number of Japanese employees in Barcelona grew, educational issues were brought to the fore within the Barcelona Wednesday Club. In 1981 a School Establishment Preparation Committee was formed, and the Japanese supplementary school opened (three teachers and 32 enrolled students) at Colegio San Ignacio de los Padres Jesuitas. In 1982 the supplementary school established a junior high division, and in 1984 momentum grew for establishing a full-time Japanese school; surveys were conducted and a preparation committee was formed. On May 20, 1985 the "Request for Establishment" and related applications were submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Spain; in 1986 the government budget included funds for construction, leading to the establishment of the Barcelona Japanese School.

Community

Students and staff participate fully in daily classes, recess, events, and presentations, creating a positive atmosphere where learners continually take on new challenges. The school hosts a busy events calendar, including a Summer Immersion program (June 30–July 18, 2025) and a 3-day residential trip to Vall de Núria (June 11–13, 2025) with boating, hiking, and museum visits, as well as the 40th Sports Day (May 24, 2025) under the anniversary slogan. Other activities include an elementary excursion to a Catalan history site (May 15, 2025), an exchange with the Autonomous University of Barcelona (April 25, 2025), and the entrance ceremony (April 11, 2025).

Located on the outskirts of Barcelona, the Barcelona Japanese School is a private foundation-run institution serving ages 3 to 15. It follows the Japanese national curriculum for elementary and middle school, guiding students to learn independently, with emotional depth and resilience. Instruction emphasizes student-led, interactive learning and uses tablets to support individualized and collaborative work within a teacher-based subject structure. Middle school classes run 45 minutes with a flexible 5-minute adjustment to preserve time for language study. From first grade, English instruction is provided and Spanish activities occur weekly for all grades. The school also conducts local fieldwork and exchanges to foster international understanding and local knowledge. The campus features a nature-rich setting with a gym, futsal court, playground, home economics, arts and crafts, science rooms, and a classroom garden. Distinctive programs include Art Day visits to Catalan cultural sites and exchanges with schools and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
