Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Montessori Palau Girona began in October 1967 as a school linked with the Montessori School in Girona. Founders Lluís Julià Ventura and Maria Barnadas Rigau moved it to the outskirts of the city into a nature-surrounded setting, and from the outset it was a mixed school that included cultural and sporting aspects with plans for first‑class facilities. In the 1990s the school underwent pedagogical renewal toward the Montessori Method, starting with AMI‑certified staff training and professionalising management while remaining a family‑run school. The Montessori Educational Method, together with teaching innovations and educational research, has led Montessori Palau Girona to become an internationally renowned centre with more than one thousand pupils. A new generation took over in 1991, continuing the development of the Montessori project.

Community

The Cultural and Sports Club began its activity in 1969 as one of the fundamental pillars of education to meet the sporting and artistic needs of participants, operating from the bases of effort, performance and values to guide personal growth through sport, music and artistic disciplines. The club's philosophy emphasises that sport must include values to foster personal growth. Montessori Palau Girona offers cultural activities such as learning instruments (piano, violin, viola, flute, guitar and drums), singing lessons, and annual concerts and music auditions open to the public, as well as chess, art workshops and theatre. Open Days provide families with a general overview of the surroundings and classrooms, with tours of all stages or specific stages.

Parent-Teacher Association

Workshops for Parents provide ideas and resources to strengthen the joint educational efforts of families and the school. Workshops are organized for small groups of parents to discuss and exchange experiences and are designed for families at the Infant and Primary Education Stages; Infant‑stage workshops are also open to families outside the school. Thematic topics cover psychomotor development and physical activity, practical life, nutrition, boundaries and tantrums, children and the environment, responsibility, self‑discipline and freedom, school life, affectivity and sexuality, language and communication, social development, physical and emotional health, and autonomy and decision‑making. The workshops are conducted by the Montessori Palau Girona team trained in AMI Montessori methods and by the Psychology and Counselling Department.

Montessori Palau Girona is a private, non-state school serving ages 0–18, structured around the Montessori approach from early years through secondary education. Infant education emphasizes neuro-sensory-psychomotor development and social experience, with development materials and a multilingual foundation in four languages. Primary education follows an interdisciplinary Cosmic Education model with a long school day to support exploration, and languages taught include Catalan, Spanish, English and German. Secondary education broadens linguistic study to six languages—Catalan, Spanish, English, French, German and Latin—with extended hours for English, mathematics, languages and sciences, and opportunities for service and production occupations and internships. The Linguistic Project integrates languages throughout stages, introducing French in secondary and Cambridge and DELF qualifications. AMI accreditation underpins the Montessori method, complemented by neuroscience research and the school's Innovation and Training Section. The campus spans five buildings on 150,000 square metres, with forested areas, laboratories, and diverse sports and cultural facilities, fostering talent through external competitions such as Physics Olympiads and MMUN.
