The English International College was founded in the summer of 1982 near Marbella on the Costa del Sol, starting with five classrooms and a roll of 32 primary and secondary students. Within a year, extended premises were acquired and the school operated with complete Primary and Secondary Departments. In November 1983, the college passed a full inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate from Great Britain and was later recognised by the Ministerio de Educación y Ciéncias in Spain, receiving accreditation on 23 March 1984 from the Consejería de Educación of the Junta de Andalucía; the college was admitted into the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) at the same time. The school grew steadily and, in 1993, obtained membership of the European Council of International Schools and became licensed to accept Spanish nationals at all levels. Examination results have been consistently impressive and students have gone on to study at prestigious universities worldwide, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Harvard and Yale; the college is recognised by premier universities as a centre of academic excellence, with students repeatedly receiving multiple offers for university placements.
Education at EIC is a partnership between teachers, parents and pupils, and close co-operation is essential for students to achieve their potential. The school includes pupils from over 20 nationalities, with over 50% of students of UK origin, and offers opportunities to appreciate the host culture while developing a broader global awareness. The EIC community emphasizes trust and collaboration among peers, staff and families as the foundation of meaningful relationships. Learning is framed by a sense of belonging within a close-knit community that extends beyond the classroom.
The PTA is at the heart of the school community, working with families and staff to enrich school life for every student. Its mission is to support, connect, and create opportunities for children to thrive—while having fun along the way. Throughout the year, the PTA raises funds to provide extra-curricular enrichment, experiences and outdoor facilities that go beyond the classroom, and helps stage memorable events that are highlights of the school calendar, such as Halloween, Winter Wonderlands, Easter Eggstravaganzas, Summer fiestas and discos. Each year group has a dedicated PTA Year Rep who serves as a contact for parents and a link between families and the school administration. The PTA also organizes social gatherings to strengthen ties within the parent community and ensure everyone feels welcome and included. Current events and fundraising coordinators are Su W. and Christine M.
