Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Life at Wingate goes beyond academic learning to nurture educational and emotional development within a caring community. The curriculum emphasises personal development and values alongside academic achievement. PSHE provision gives students knowledge and opportunities to reflect on rights, responsibilities, and beliefs, with lessons delivered by pastoral tutors in the Senior School and by class teachers in the Primary School. The school promotes relationships education, safe behaviours, and guidance through Careers education as part of personal development. Wellbeing and mental health are addressed through universal and targeted approaches with staff training and access to external help when needed, and safeguarding and pastoral care underpin the learning environment for welfare and safety.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Wingate has a Gifted and Talented policy to identify and challenge More Able pupils, with a More Able register, assessment, extension provision, and progression tracking to ensure progress. The policy aims to provide enrichment and challenging teaching, with a focus on high expectations and developing social and emotional development alongside academics. Teachers differentiate to meet learning needs and the More Able coordinator coordinates interventions, with external specialists used when needed. For language and learning needs, Wingate operates an English Development Programme and allocates additional staff to support EAL learners; in some cases private lessons may be advised for KS4. The school also coordinates with its SENCO and external agencies where appropriate.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Instruction is in English and Wingate serves students from many linguistic backgrounds. All teaching is in English (except Spanish and French lessons), and students are encouraged to speak English in and out of lessons; additional staff support EAL learners and differentiation is provided as needed. Wingate offers an English Development Programme to raise English proficiency prior to mainstream classes, with private lessons available if progress is slow, and parental involvement encouraged. Four full-time native Spanish teachers provide Spanish as a second language up to five classes per week to maintain high levels of Spanish.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing are central to Wingate's approach. The Wellbeing and Positive Mental Health Policy defines mental health as the ability to realise potential, cope with stress, and contribute to the community, and promotes universal and targeted approaches to wellbeing. The policy covers staff CPD, identification and early support for issues, and access to external agencies when needed, alongside PSHE-led development of protective knowledge and skills. Designated safeguarding and wellbeing leaders coordinate support, with clear procedures to involve families and external professionals. The policy also emphasises keeping parents informed about mental health topics taught in PSHE.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a central priority at Wingate School. A Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) heads safeguarding efforts and there is a dedicated safeguarding email channel for reporting concerns. All staff undergo regular safeguarding training, and practices align with UK and Spanish law. The safeguarding framework covers safer recruitment, risk assessment for trips, anti-bullying measures, data protection, and reporting procedures. The welfare of children is paramount, with clear responsibilities and coordination with external agencies when necessary.
