Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) was established in 2005 through an agreement between His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Al Qassimi and the Government of Victoria, Australia, to deliver the Victorian curriculum in Sharjah. It operates as a not-for-profit international school offering the Victorian version of the Australian curriculum, with teachers predominantly drawn from Victoria, Australia, and close ties to Australian authorities to support curriculum delivery. VISS has expanded across the emirate, with the Central Region opening in August 2020 and Tilal opening in September 2024. The Al Taawun campus earned Cognia's Distinguished School status in 2024, reflecting the network's accreditation and quality assurance standards. The group maintains ties with Australian authorities to support curriculum delivery and professional development.

Community

VISS fosters a diverse, multinational school community across its campuses with active participation from families in school life. Annual events include National Day, Pink Day, Flag Day, Australia Day, Book Character Day, and music and dance concerts, with the broader VISS International Day celebrating diversity. The school supports community outreach through charity fundraising and partnerships, and runs student leadership activities via a Student Representative Council (SRC). Parental involvement is encouraged through workshops and events, including sessions led for parents on technology use.

Parent-Teacher Association

VISS maintains an active Parents Association that coordinates parent involvement in school life. The association organizes events such as International Day, National Day, sport carnivals, Grandparents Day, Pink Day, Sausage Sizzles, and Coffee Sessions. Parents participate in social activities and collaborate with staff to support student activities and fundraising initiatives, including partnerships with charities like The Big Heart in the UAE and The Fred Hollows Foundation from Australia. There are formal structures, including two formal PTA meetings per term, and workshops with faculties across Pre-KG to Grade 12. Mornings with the Principal and other informational sessions are part of ongoing parent engagement.
