Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Rikkyo School in England opened in 1972 with 19 pupils in the primary division, followed by the junior school in 1973 and the high school in 1976. It was designated as an overseas educational facility by the Japanese Ministry of Education in 1975 and was recognised by the UK as an Independent School in 1977. Anniversary concerts were held at major London venues: the 10th in 1982 at Wigmore Hall, the 15th in 1987 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, the 20th in 1992 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, the 25th in 1997 at Queen Elizabeth Hall, the 30th in 2002, and the 40th in 2012 at St. John's Smith Square. The campus expanded with a dining hall (1985), a chapel and classroom block (1986), a gym (1993), a GCSE science course (1994), a science building (1995), a 400m all-weather track (1999), and a martial arts hall (2002). In 2015, the school formed a partnership with University College London and the University of Surrey to establish a UK university entrance program, and a new girls' dormitory was completed.

Community

New students participate in a sports day two weeks after term starts, forming cross-year teams led by older pupils to build school spirit. The Japanese Evening invites local pupils to experience Japanese culture through activities such as tea ceremony, martial arts, calligraphy, and origami, coordinated by the student council. Mid-term breaks include home stays arranged by the school or host families; Wimbledon tennis matches are a major annual highlight. The year also features an entrance ceremony and Bluebell visit in April, a sports day and Japanese Evening in May, Wimbledon viewing in June, a school concert in July, and Open Day in November plus Christmas events that foster a strong sense of community.

Parent-Teacher Association

The school has an Alumni Association and a Supporters group that organise activities and events; information about their activities is posted on the Alumni & Supporters site, with details on the linked site. The Alumni site provides updates, galleries and messages from alumni, and there is a Bluebell Fundraising page to support school initiatives.
