Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

UAS follows a U.S., international, and Uruguayan curricular framework. The language of instruction is English, with Spanish language courses and Uruguayan Program courses taught in Spanish. Core subjects—language arts, reading, mathematics, social studies, and science—are taught through engaging, transdisciplinary units that connect across disciplines. The program emphasizes inquiry, collaboration, and reflection, guided by six transdisciplinary themes and the UAS Learner Profile (Globally Aware, Creative, Emotionally Intelligent).

Arts and Creative

Arts and technology are integrated into the curriculum. Integrated Technology, Music, Drama, and Art are offered as specialist classes, with Library and Social-Emotional Learning supporting the arts. Students can take multiple arts and technology electives; the program fosters creativity and self-expression across grades.

Cultural and Language

UAS is a multicultural learning community with students from many nationalities. The high school profile notes long-standing clubs and activities such as National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Student Council, New Student Ambassadors, and Newspaper/Yearbook committees. UAS participates in SAAC competitions with regional international schools, and students travel to SAAC events and MUN conferences. The program offers language studies in German and French as part of its language offerings.

Social and Hobbies

After-school activities are offered for Elementary through High School, including soccer, baseball, swimming, volleyball, karate, chess, and more; Middle and High School offer additional options such as basketball, gymnastics, WeCode, robotics (beginner and advanced), and other arts and language activities.

Community and Service

Beyond the classroom, students learn life skills, develop leadership and problem-solving abilities, and participate in community service.

Leadership and Professional

Student leadership is supported through organizations such as Student Council, National Honor Society, Model United Nations, and New Student Ambassadors; college and career counseling is provided using Morrisby and BridgeU to help students identify college paths and fit.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The Athletics Department promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, competition, and regular physical exercise; teams compete in SAAC and local leagues. The school emphasizes lifelong healthy habits and leadership through sport.

Uruguayan American School (UAS) is a private, college-preparatory day school in Montevideo, founded in 1958 to promote intercultural understanding through a U.S.-style education in Uruguay. The curriculum blends the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards with the U.S. Common Core, delivered in English in Early Childhood and Elementary, while Spanish Language and Social Studies follow the Uruguayan ANEP-DGEIP framework. An optional Uruguayan Program (UP) through Grade 6 provides an integrated, inquiry-based track in Spanish that yields both U.S. and Uruguayan diplomas and Mercosur transcript recognition. In Secondary, Grades 9–10 use a U.S. curriculum, and Grades 11–12 offer the International Baccalaureate, with three diplomas available: U.S. High School Diploma, Uruguayan Diploma, and IB Diploma. UAS is NEASC-accredited in the United States and ANEP-accredited in Uruguay, and the IB Diploma Program is offered. The three-hectare Carrasco campus houses a large library with more than 19,000 books, four science laboratories, a Design Lab, multiple computer labs, two gymnasiums, a fitness center, outdoor fields, an auditorium, and airy, air-conditioned classrooms.
