The school was founded in 1990 by the Malherbe family after years of expatriate life. They opened a nursery and preschool in Le Pecq, and the main site in Le Vésinet followed in 1992 with primary classes. The school began as a Montessori preschool and later extended the primary curriculum on a British framework with a strong French component to ease transitions within France or abroad. In 2013, Anne-Claire Malherbe, the family's daughter, became Head of School and opened a Spanish section to support bilingual or trilingual study. In 2019, the main site expanded into a neighbouring property, adding two classrooms, a music room, and a garden.
The school community reflects multiple international backgrounds and celebrates diverse traditions through many events each year. Celebrations include Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, St Patrick's Day and Easter. The Christmas celebration includes a concert by the children and a Christmas Fair organized by the Parents' Committee. Sports Day and the Summer Fête, organized by the Parents' Association, are key annual community events.
The school has a Parents' Association and a Parents' Committee that actively support school life and events. They organize key annual events such as the Summer Fête and Christmas Fair. Families are encouraged to get involved through these activities and to welcome new families to join the MIS community. The association supports other activities and celebrations across the year. This involvement strengthens the MIS community and family engagement.
Malherbe International School (MIS) is a bilingual day school in Le Vésinet, France, teaching children from age 2 to 13. Nursery and Pre-school follow Montessori methods, while Primary education is based on the English National Curriculum, with four days per week of English instruction and two to three half-days of French, plus a French immersion option for language learners. The curriculum also includes the British Curriculum, Cambridge IGCSE, and French Curriculum, with a strong emphasis on French language development. The main site is housed in a restored 19th-century residence, with a dedicated library, computer room, and music room; in 2019 the Garden School expansion added a large garden, a preschool library, and wheelchair accessibility. MIS prepares pupils to transfer to home schools or Paris-area middle schools. Features include a Spanish section added in 2013, a bilingual environment, and after-school clubs (STEM, drama, music, languages) that extend learning beyond the classroom.
