Surabaya Intercultural School opened in 1971 under the sponsorship of the American Consulate with 24 students. It was the first school in Surabaya to be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in 1985. In 1995 it moved to its current 50,000-square-meter campus in Citra Raya, West Surabaya. Since 2000 the Indonesian government has permitted SIS to admit Indonesian students, and the school now serves students from more than 25 countries. In 2012 SIS was authorized to offer the IB Primary Years Programme for elementary students and the AP program for high school; in 2024 the school earned Apple Distinguished School recognition for its technology program.
Surabaya Intercultural School fosters a welcoming environment where every member feels valued and respected. It celebrates diverse backgrounds and perspectives, treating everyone with fairness and empathy. Student-led groups support local and national programs focused on disability awareness and advocacy, and community members are encouraged to engage with these resources to reinforce inclusion.
Surabaya Intercultural School is a non-profit school owned by the parent community through the Yayasan Surabaya International School Foundation; tuition is reinvested into education and facilities, with profits used for development and improvements. The school operates a three-tier governance structure: Board of Supervisors, Board of Patrons, and Board of Management. The Board of Patrons is comprised of parents and sets policy, approves the annual budget, works on strategic goals, and hires the Head of School; it meets monthly with BOM and BOS. The Board of Supervisors provides non-voting oversight, and the Board of Management handles day-to-day operations.
