Let the school know you're thinking of applying — they can share their prerequisites and help you through the process.
It's best to ask — circumstances can change at any time.
1. Before the first registration, contact the YIS Admission Office by phone or email if you have questions about the school. Parents may also visit the YIS campus to meet staff or arrange an appointment with the YIS Principal. This early contact helps clarify programs and expectations before applying.
2. Complete the Enrollment Forms, which can be downloaded here or are available at the YIS Front Office. The enrollment forms initiate the admissions process and set the foundation for placement.
3. On the enrollment form, foreign parents and students must attach color scans of their current passport and resident visa (KITAS). Indonesian parents and students must attach color scans of their National Identity Cards (KTP) and recent passport photographs. For all students, copies of birth certificates, school records and transcripts from previous schools, and relevant health records must be attached. Original transcripts will be solicited directly by YIS Administration.
4. After submitting the enrollment forms and attachments, pay a one-time non-refundable registration fee of 250 USD. This payment is part of the enrollment process before placement can be finalized.
5. Following submission, an admissions procedure begins that considers parental and student expectations and the international curriculum offered by YIS. The outcome may be placement at the appropriate grade level, a recommendation for external tests, internal observations during a limited trial period, or a conclusion that the school cannot fulfill the expectations and suggests seeking another school.
6. Once placement is confirmed, parents sign a standard agreement on terms and conditions that apply to enrollment, including parents' rights, obligations and limitations, and the timely payment of school fees.
7. Upon placement, parents receive a copy of the YIS Parents and Students Handbook. Students will have the right to use a YIS email account and a YIS Student Identity Card.
8. English is the main language of instruction at YIS. Many students speak a different mother tongue at home, and English is a second language used at school. The school will admit children with limited English language backgrounds only if their parents arrange extra English language lessons outside the school. For younger students this is usually adequate, but older students may need more intensive effort to follow lessons.
9. Admission of students is at the sole discretion of the school. The school reserves the right to refuse admission to any student if an appropriate educational program and support services are not available, or if the teaching program does not match the expectations of parents and/or students. The school does not have special facilities to meet the needs of children who have serious learning, emotional or physical challenges.
Yogyakarta Independent School (YIS) is a private international school offering the complete International Baccalaureate continuum for ages 3 to 18, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). The language of instruction is English, with French, Spanish and Indonesian integrated into the curriculum. Bahasa Indonesia/Indonesian Studies, Agama and Pancasila are taught for Indonesian students during regular school hours. YIS is the only international school in Yogyakarta authorized to deliver the full IB program. The school traces its origins to 1989 and is operated by the Yogyakarta Foundation for International Education (YPIY), a non-profit foundation. The 6.5-hectare campus in Sinduadi features botanical gardens, an Olympic-size outdoor sport field, an athletic running track, and modern classrooms, with safety-minded grounds and a guarded front gate. The YIS Parents Association (YISPA) coordinates excursions and events, while a Leadership Team and IB Coordinators guide curriculum development for students worldwide.
