It's best to ask — circumstances can change at any time.
From its beginnings in early 1989, YIS opened with 30 students and four teachers and grew into Yogyakarta's flagship for international primary and secondary education. The school is operated by the Yogyakarta Foundation for International Education (YPIY), a not-for-profit foundation established in 1989 to launch and manage YIS. The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture licensed YIS to deliver an international curriculum in English to both foreign nationals and Indonesian students. In 2014, the ministry issued four licenses for Early Years, Primary Education, Junior High, and Senior High; based on a ministerial instruction to drop the word 'international' from school names, the school was renamed Yogyakarta Independent School (YIS). The campus features modern indoor classroom facilities, Olympic-standard outdoor sport fields, and botanical gardens.
YIS brings together students, parents, teachers, and staff representing more than 10 nationalities, creating a diverse and internationally minded community. The Leadership Team comprises a Principal and three IB Programme Coordinators, and collaboration with curriculum leaders underpins curriculum development. YISPA, the school's volunteer parent association, supports and organizes special programs and events for the community. The Yogyakarta Foundation for International Education is a non-profit organization, led by The Board, whose function is to safeguard the school's vision and mission. YIS hosts and celebrates cultural and community events, including Lunar New Year celebrations and Indonesian Independence Day observances.
YISPA is an autonomous body within the YIS community; all parents of enrolled students may join. The YISPA serves to welcome new parents, facilitate social activities among parents, support school events and assist with excursions and extra-curricular activities at the request and with the principal's permission. Examples of YISPA support include catering at school events and performances, organizing the end-of-the-year party, coordinating transportation for excursions and field trips, coaching in sport events and after-school activities, and fundraising initiatives. The Management Team of YISPA comprises a Chairperson, a Secretary and a Treasurer. The YISPA is an autonomous institution within the YIS community and does not speak on behalf of the parents or the school; it facilitates communication, interaction and engagement among parents. Parents who wish to volunteer may contact the YISPA management committee at yispa@yis-edu.org.
Yogyakarta Independent School (YIS) is a private international school offering the complete International Baccalaureate continuum for ages 3 to 18, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). YIS is the only international school in Yogyakarta authorized to deliver the full IB program. The school traces its origins to 1989 and is operated by the Yogyakarta Foundation for International Education (YPIY), a non-profit foundation. The 6.5-hectare campus in Sinduadi features botanical gardens, an Olympic-size outdoor sport field, an athletic running track, and modern classrooms, with safety-minded grounds and a guarded front gate.
