Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

The Waldorf School Luxembourg uses a Waldorf approach designed to support the development of the whole child. The primary curriculum is multisensory and integrates the arts into every subject to engage the whole learner and prioritize understanding over memorization. In the early years, learning occurs through movement-based classroom activities and storytelling to foster memory, perception, and social development. The school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in French, with some subjects taught in German or English, providing an internationally recognized route to university. The Diploma Programme core includes the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, Service.

Arts and Creative

Arts-crafts and movement form a core part of the timetable in the primary years, with knitting, drawing, painting and other crafts alongside music and movement. The curriculum weaves the arts throughout subjects, including music, eurythmy, theatre and visual arts, across both primary and secondary levels. In secondary, arts and theatre remain integral, with opportunities to study visual arts and theatre in English within the IB framework. Visual Arts and Theatre are taught in English as part of the IB programme.

Cultural and Language

Preschool uses Luxembourgish as the language of instruction; primary uses German as the vehicular language with French and English introduced as foreign languages; secondary uses French as the vehicular language while German decreases and English remains a foreign language. The International Baccalaureate programme is conducted in French as the main language, with some subjects taught in German or English, and Visual Arts and Theatre taught in English. The school's language policy across levels reflects these arrangements, with English and French featured prominently in the IB context.

Social and Hobbies

Afterschool care, called Maison relais Waldorf, serves children from ages 3 to 12 in five groups, with term hours from 12:30pm to 5:30pm and holidays from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Homework supervision is available for secondary pupils during the aftercare period. Sports and movement are encouraged through school programs and clubs, including LASEL, a sports club that connects pupils with activities such as climbing, triathlon, volleyball, handball and mountain-biking. Primary and secondary curricula include regular sports and movement activities as part of daily life.

Community and Service

Year 9 includes an agriculture internship; Year 10 features a craftsman internship; Year 11 provides a social internship, with several weeks of hands-on experience. Projects such as geology field studies and theatre work run through the year, and students undertake extended excursions and international experiences as part of their programme. These internships and projects emphasize a range of practical and collaborative skills, including teamwork, problem solving, and project management.

Leadership and Professional

Internships and year-long projects develop specialized skills, methodological abilities, social and personal development, and leadership capabilities. A Regent teacher acts as the ongoing class tutor and point of contact, coordinating the class across subjects. The International Baccalaureate core includes Creativity, Activity, Service and Theory of Knowledge to foster leadership, critical thinking and self-directed learning.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The school emphasizes a rhythm of day, week and year to support security, well-being and a holistic approach to learning. Each day follows a structured rhythm, with weeks and terms featuring seasonal activities and celebrations, including Christian festivals that involve the school community. The environment uses natural materials and a home-like atmosphere, with regular outdoor time and forest walks; festivals and seasonal events invite parental participation to strengthen community ties. After-school care and forest/outdoor activities contribute to daily wellbeing and balanced living.

Luxembourg Waldorf School (Fräi-ëffentlech Waldorfschoul Lëtzebuerg) welcomes children from age 3 to 18 and follows a Waldorf Steiner curriculum alongside the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Early learning is optional; Spillschoul lasts two to three years. From first through sixth grade, a form teacher guides the class for six years, after which a regent supports pupils through 11th class. The secondary years run from 7th to 11th and culminate in an IB preparatory year before the Diploma Programme, conducted primarily in French with subjects in German or English. The school's language policy blends Luxembourgish in preschool, German as the primary language of instruction in primary, and French as vehicular in secondary, with English used for select IB courses, notably Visual Arts and Theatre taught in English. The campus includes a Limpertsberg site with buildings, a biodynamic farm at Rollingen/Mersch, and on-site after-care. The Veräin fir Waldorfpädagogik Lëtzebuerg supports administration and development.
