ISS Madeira offers flexible, learning-centered spaces designed to support inquiry and collaboration. Learning spaces go beyond traditional classrooms, with interactive zones and multifunctional areas that encourage movement, play, and discovery. The spaces include Mountain Top for lectures, Cave for focused work, Campire for dialogue and collaborative group work, Watering Hole for social interaction, Hands-On for practical learning, and Movement for physical activity. PYP students share a larger community with several home bases, while MYP students transition to mentor spaces; DP students enjoy flexible, bookable mentor areas. English is the official language of instruction in a multilingual community representing over 35 nationalities.
Learning environments evolve with student development, from home bases for PYP to mentor spaces for MYP and DP. The school offers IB programmes (PYP, MYP and DP) and emphasises inquiry-based, cross-disciplinary learning with student voice. The six principles for innovative learning shape spaces that support lectures, collaboration, and independent study. The multilingual community and explicit focus on language development support academic achievement. Training and spaces are designed to foster independent learning, collaboration, and adaptability across year groups.
The 2025/2026 After School Activities Programme offers a broad range of activities in arts, music, science and sports. Examples include Chess, Happy Code (PYP and MYP), Sailing, and Show Dance. There are dedicated clubs such as Board Games, Book Study, Choir, Debate Club, English Games, English Support I and II, Fitness Club, Homework Club, Junior and Senior Basketball, Junior and Junior Football, Mandarin I and II, Math Olympiad Prep, Maths Support I–III, MUN, Open Court, Portuguese Support, Racket Games, Sewing Club, Storytime, Visual Arts I and II, and Volleyball. Some activities are included in tuition, while others are charged per term.
International Sharing School Madeira (ISS Madeira) is an IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. English is the official language of instruction, and ISS Madeira serves a community representing over 35 nationalities. The IB curriculum uses an inquiry- and concept-based approach across subjects, with emphasis on language development. The Diploma Programme includes Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics and The Arts, with options such as English A, Portuguese A, and language acquisition subjects including Portuguese B, German B, French B and Spanish B. The DP core elements—Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS—encourage independent inquiry and personal growth, preparing students for university.
