ASD was founded in 1988 as the American International School (AIS) through a partnership between the U.S. Embassy and leading members of the Qatari community. In 1997 AIS changed its name to the American School of Doha (ASD) as enrollment grew to about 500 students. In 1998 ASD opened a new campus in Al Bustan to accommodate growth. The school expanded again in 2007 with a Middle School/High School campus, and by 2011 enrollment had reached around 2,000 students. ASD earned NEASC accreditation in 1994 and was reaccredited in 2021.
ASD maintains a diverse international community with students and families from many nationalities. International Week is a signature annual event featuring a parade of nations and a 77-country international buffet. ASD students regularly participate in international arts and music events, including the AMIS Jazz Festival in Hong Kong.
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at ASD is a parent volunteer organization that plays a vital role in supporting and strengthening the ASD community. It works with groups such as the Booster Club (athletics and activities), the Creative Arts Support Team (CAST), the Arab Mothers Association (AMA) and the Black Family Heritage Association (BFHA) to support students and school programs. The PTA coordinates volunteer participation in school events and fundraising to enhance classroom and after-school opportunities. Booster Club funds athletic programs and events; CAST assists the Fine Arts Department with arts initiatives; AMA and BFHA provide engagement channels for their communities. The PTA fosters parent involvement through committees, workshops, and family-friendly activities that connect families with the school.
