Founded in October 2008, the German International School Doha (DIS Doha) began as a recognized German overseas school in Doha's Al Maamoura district. It is part of the worldwide network of 140 German Schools Abroad and is supervised by the German Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) and the Central Federal Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA). The curriculum follows the Thuringia state framework with German-English bilingual instruction from the early grades, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is offered in the final years; since 2016, IB DP has served as a university entrance qualification. In 2018 the school earned the official quality seal “Excellent German School Abroad” after the Bund-Länder-Inspektion (BLI). By the late 2010s the school educated hundreds of students and employed roughly 28–30 teachers.
DIS Doha hosts a diverse student body drawn from many nationalities, with enrollment reaching about 350 students by 2023. The school community organizes and participates in cultural and family events, including the Festival of Cultures and the Kindergarten Family Lantern Fall Festival. The 10th anniversary celebration in 2018 was attended by German and other ambassadors, highlighting the school's role in international cultural exchange. The school actively engages with the Doha community through ongoing programs and inter-national collaborations.
DIS Doha maintains a formal Parent Council (PTA) that represents parents in school matters. The council operates under Rules of Procedures for the Parents Council. The current co-chairs are Silke Sterr and Paola Di Giorgio. The PTA coordinates and supports school activities and community events, including the Winter Market at DIS Doha 2025. The Council also fosters partnerships with external organizations to support German-speaking families, such as a cooperation with Villa Kinderwelt and connections with the German Embassy Doha; it maintains links to other partners within the German schools abroad network. The PTA works closely with school management to advance family-oriented initiatives.
