Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school places a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning through emotional intelligence. Primary students participate in an emotional expression workshop led by the theatre teacher. The school notes that emotions, knowledge, and motivation are interconnected, and that positive emotions support better cognitive outcomes. UNESCO's Delors pillars guide the approach, identifying learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together. Historically formal education has prioritized the first two pillars, but Obradoiro places great importance on emotional intelligence to prepare future adults. The IB continuum is used to support holistic development across intellectual, physical, emotional, and ethical dimensions.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school offers an Orientation Department providing academic, psychopedagogical, and professional guidance. Reinforcement and support classes are included in the tuition from Year 3 of Primary. Individualized sessions for Bachillerato are available. Staff includes professionals with experience in teaching students with special needs. The department supports students through assessments and targeted guidance to meet diverse learning needs.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school hosts students from more than 20 nationalities. We offer study abroad programs ranging from two weeks to a full year, and exchanges with Canada and France. The languages taught during the school day include English, French, German, Chinese, Spanish, and Galician. In Early Childhood Education, more than 70% of teaching hours are in English, with 92% of the official school day conducted in English. In Primary Education, more than 50% of teaching hours are in English, with 68% of the official school day conducted in English. In Compulsory Secondary Education, between 40% and 60% of subjects are taught in English.

Mental Wellbeing

Emotional intelligence is a central part of the school's approach to wellbeing. Pupils in Primary participate in an emotional expression workshop to develop communication and emotional skills. The school emphasizes that emotions, knowledge and motivation are linked, and that positive emotions support learning. It recognises the four UNESCO pillars of education and aims to develop students across physical, intellectual, emotional, and ethical domains through the IB framework (PYP, MYP and DP). Emotional security is viewed as essential for confident public speaking and personal growth. Obradoiro Talks on health and wellbeing address digital health and nutrition, exploring how emotions influence eating and how technology habits affect sleep and social identity, with commitments to small positive daily changes.

Safeguarding

The school appoints a Data Protection Officer (DPO): MASSLEY S.L. and has a privacy policy and a cookies policy. It provides on-site nursing for student health needs. The School also offers an Orientation Department delivering academic, psychopedagogical and professional guidance, supporting safeguarding and welfare. Privacy and data handling policies are in place to protect student information, and the orientation services are designed to support the safe and holistic development of pupils.
