The language of instruction in the primary school is German, and the vast majority of subjects are taught in German. English is taught as a subject with three hours per week in Years 1–2 and four hours per week in Years 3–4. In Secondary I, most lessons are in German with some units in English; English is the first foreign language from Year 5, a second foreign language from Year 6 (French or Latin), with Spanish optional from Year 8 or 10, and from Year 9 a German course can be taken with the Goethe Institute. In Secondary II, the language of instruction is mainly German, with the aim of bilingual proficiency; the DIA leads to the German International Abitur, with the option to pursue IB or FOS, and since 2023/24 the digital Fachhochschulreife (dFOS) has been introduced.
The school has a bilingual language programme in German and English. The programme broadens pupils' linguistic foundations in German and English and enables fluency in both languages. It operates across the full range of the school, from kindergarten through Year 12.
In the Kinderhaus, immersion is used: some teachers speak exclusively German while others use English. Children learn both languages in natural contexts through routines, play and activities. Targeted language support is offered three times a week to children aged 4 and over as part of the 'German for the start of school' programme.
Deutsche Schule London is a German Auslandsschule in London, recognised by German Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen. The school provides continuous education from Kindergarten through Abitur or International Baccalaureate, for pupils aged 3 to 18. German curriculum has been expanded to include IB and elements from English system, enabling pupils to graduate with German International Abitur (DIA) and, from 2023/24, Fachhochschulreife (FHS). In upper secondary (11–12) students may pursue a dual qualification with DIA and IB or complete the DIA with IB as a course, under KMK guidelines. Languages taught include English, French and Spanish, with bilingual subjects to support multilingualism. The school sits on a green site between Richmond Park and the Thames, with Sudbrook Kinderhaus and main campus, libraries and study facilities, a modern sports hall and a new Multi Games Arena (MUGA) opened in 2024. After-school activities, music and arts programs, and community events complete the offering.
